Roderick
B. Brown, M.D., FAAFP
Family Medicine and Surgery
Native
to Mankato, MN, Dr. Brown worked for an ophthalmologist as an optician while attending college
and came to discover immense enjoyment in the science
of medicine. He saw the positive impact that practicing
medicine can create in a patient’s life as
well as the challenges involved and knew it was
the role for him.
Dr. Brown came to the Glenwood community in 1984
and fell in love with the rural setting as an ideal
place to provide medical care as well as to live
and raise a family. He and his wife Renae had traveled
the Midwest before setting their eyes
on Glenwood and knew there was no other place like
it. His philosophy in medicine, training and abilities
fit well within the Glacial Ridge Health System
setting. He was able to offer a variety of new skills
and areas of practice to the hospital and
was warmly welcomed.
Dr. Brown’s Bachelor of Arts degree is from
Mankato State University. He decided to join the
medical profession and received further training
as a student of the University of Minnesota Medical
School, both in Duluth and Minneapolis. He completed
his residency and surgical fellowship at the University
of Minnesota before joining GRHS where he continues
to learn more each day. Dr. Brown helps to educate
and train his peers and patients on modern solutions
and practices.
Laparoscopic surgery has been a strong focus of
Dr. Brown’s and he has made a number of significant
contributions to the field of medical technology.
He is the inventor and patent holder of the Rebound
Hernia Repair Device® (HRD). With this invention,
Dr. Brown has given a great number of presentations
on the capabilities and uses of this device and
contracted with MMDI in Plymouth, MN to engineer,
manufacture and market the product worldwide. It
is the first and only FDA approved Hernia Repair
Device for laparoscopic surgery – and has
been highly
adopted by physicians and surgeons worldwide who
trial the device. Dr. Brown calls himself an “imagineer”
and is always looking for new ideas for use in the
medical field.
When not immersed in family practice, medical inventions
and new ideas, Dr. Brown enjoys both water and downhill
skiing, motorcycling and
hunting upland birds with his Large Munsterlanders.
Dr. Brown’s children were inspired to join
the medical community; his son is a graduate of
the
University of Texas Southwestern Medical School
and is now a resident in Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
His daughter is currently attending dental school
at the University of Minnesota.
